Sushi shaped by the art of simplicity.
Forty-plus Japanese restaurants on this stretch of Ventura. Most of them are fine. Sumi exists for the people who want more than fine but don't need a performance to get it. Good fish. A room you actually want to sit in. A place that works for your Saturday date and your Wednesday night craving.

Sumi means black ink.
One brush. One stroke. Nothing you can take back, and nothing you'd want to. In sumi-e painting, the artist grinds ink against a stone before the brush ever moves. The preparation is invisible. The result looks effortless. We liked that. So we named the restaurant after it.

What you'll notice
And a few things you won't
The fish decides the menu
What arrives each morning sets what we serve. If you ask what's good today, the answer will be different than yesterday. That's the point.
Precision in every piece
The cuts, the rice, the balance. Every one of them is a decision, made the same way tonight as last night. You don't need to see the work. You'll taste it.
Elegant enough for a date.
Easy enough for Tuesday.
Some restaurants are built for occasions. This one is built for your week. Come on a Wednesday with no reason at all. Stay longer than you planned.

Come once. Come back always.
Dinner, seven days a week. Walk in or reserve. Either way, we're ready.
